(WJW) – Experts from the National Weather Service were in Northeast Ohio on Wednesday to assess storm damage and determine how many tornadoes ripped through the area.
As of Wednesday evening, the NWS has confirmed two tornadoes during Tuesday’s storms. The first touched down in Bedford and Valley View, while the second touched down in Avon Lake and lifted in Rocky River.
Crews are expected to continue their assessments Thursday.
FOX 8 Meteorologists report wind gusts in the area as high as 86 miles per hour were recorded off Cleveland’s shoreline and more heavy wind gusts elsewhere.
On Tuesday, a Tornado Warning began around 4 p.m. with Cuyahoga and Lorain Counties and ended in Mahoning County.
NWS is sending two survey teams out Wednesday. They will be surveying Avon Lake to Rocky River, Brook Park east to Valley View and the Brecksville area and then Bedford to Solon, Mentor, Chesterland and possibly SE Geauga.
As a result of the storms, power outages linger and some area businesses are closed. FirstEnergy’s Illuminating Company wrote in a Wednesday morning post on Facebook that they expect power outages to be a “multi-day restoration effort for many.” Cleveland Public Power also said “the majority of CPP customers will be restored before the weekend,” in a Wednesday post on X.

The severe weather left behind a lot of damage. In the video below, you can see what one woman in Parma Heights described as a “war zone” as an apartment building garage roof was blown off.
In Avon Lake, a tree fell on a home on Cherry Lane. Neighbors were worried when they saw the homeowner’s car in the garage but were relieved to hear he was at work at the time. FOX 8’s Jessica Dill reported from the scene early Wednesday morning. You can watch her report in the video below.
