King Charles Makes Huge Announcement About First Trip Overseas Since Cancer Diagnosis
King Charles III
King Charles III has announced that he will soon embark on his first overseas trip since revealing his cancer diagnosis.
The 75-year-old monarch will travel to France next month for a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The Normandy landings marked a significant turning point for the Allies during World War II. Tens of thousands of troops died in the Battle of Normandy that followed.
In his first major trip since his cancer diagnosis, the king will visit the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer on June 6, Buckingham Palace told the BBC. The memorial pays tribute to the 22,422 individuals who lost their lives while serving in British units on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy.
Queen Camilla will reportedly expected to accompany Charles on the trip and at another D-Day ceremony one day earlier in Portsmouth, England.

While Prince William will not travel with the king and queen to visit the memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, he will reportedly join them at the ceremony in Portsmouth on June 5. The Prince of Wales will then visit Omaha Beach, one of the Normandy landing points in Saint Laurent sur Mer, alongside several heads of state on June 6, the BBC reported.
The king’s first overseas trip will come just a few weeks after he returned to his public royal duties at the end of April. Charles took a break from public-facing duties following his diagnosis but continued official State business while receiving “regular treatments,” the palace said back in February.
Charles revealed his cancer diagnosis in a statement Buckingham Palace released on Feb. 5. The news came a few weeks after Charles underwent surgery for treatment of an enlarged prostate, which the palace said was unrelated to his diagnosis. However, tests conducted during his hospital stay did detect cancer, palace officials said. The type of cancer Charles is battling has not been publicly revealed.
