Houma begins recovery post Hurricane Francine
HOUMA, La. (WGNO) — The City of Houma was hit hard by Hurricane Francine and saw significant damage throughout the area.
Trees were knocked over, power lines were damaged and homes were left without power.
“A tree fell on the power line, so there’s no power, and we have no gas,” Houma resident Angie Dominique said.

“Right now, all we’re doing is without lights, and I got a lung condition, so I need some way to get lights,” resident Darell Hancock said.
For a few unfortunate people, property damage also occurred. Dan Stevens saw the roof of his store “Junk in the Trunk” completely blown off.
“I guess I feel bad for the people who shop here every week, you know? They come here looking for certain things, and you know they are able to buy a lot of stuff for not a lot of money, so unless I reopen, which I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet, they won’t have the same opportunity in this section of town,” Stevens said.
Thankfully, good Samaritans responded right away. A group called “Mercy Chefs” joined Cross Church to serve hot meals and comfort food.
“If you’re able to come in, folks who don’t have power, they don’t have water, for some of them, it may have been the worst day they’ve ever had. And to share that beautiful, hand-crafted, chef prepared meal just provides hope and a little bit of comfort in that moment,” Mercy Chefs founder Chef Gary Leblanc said.

Those who received these meals say that acts of kindness during times like these are what help communities like theirs stay afloat.
“That’s awesome. That’s awesome, you know, because like they always talk about in south Louisiana, we always come together, and I think that’s what we do especially in times like this. We come together and everybody tries to help,” resident Bonita Boudoin said.
“It’s a blessing. It’s a blessing. Thank you. Thank y’all. Yeah,” Dominique said.
