New Hope eatery named one of the best restaurants in US. Everything to know before you go

The Speckled Egg Café, a small under-the-radar eatery in New Hope, found its way into the spotlight.

This week, the café made national news — making it onto the 2024 USA TODAY Restaurants of the Year list — along with 46 other restaurants around the country.

“We are absolutely stunned and truly humbled,” said Tony Artur, who co-owns the restaurant with Chef Megan Loos. “We love what we do and to be acknowledged like this feels like a dream.”

The allure may not seem obvious at first.

Far from the towns’s riverfront dining scene, The Speckled Egg Café is bright little spot inside a dimly-lit green barn at Rice’s Market, a year-round indoor and outdoor flea market nestled in the New Hope countryside.

Cheerful blue siding and four-paned windows makes entering the café feel like coming home, where you’re likely to be greeted by a smiling face behind the counter, as Loos works her magic over the griddle and Artur talks with new customers like they’re old friends.

The pair, who met while working together at Martine’s in downtown New Hope, first opened their café in 2021 across the river at the Golden Nugget Antique Flea Market in Amwell, New Jersey before landing at Rice’s in New Hope the following year.

Their goal was to make food that would appeal to flea marketgoers and foodies alike in a space that felt inviting to everyone who stepped through their doors. Which is why their menu, which changes regularly, always features some kind of twist on hot dog, burger and breakfast sandwich — all while experimenting with a diverse range of regional and global flavors.

What to order at The Speckled Egg Café

Tony’s Scrapple Their own take on the popular regional breakfast meat, Tony’s Scrapple is one of the latest items to find a permanent spot on the menu. Made in-house using pork shoulder, liver, cornmeal and spices, the scrapple gets its unique texture from being cooked in a waffle iron, leaving it crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Chicken Shawarma Burger This flavor-packed handheld is a customer favorite that makes a regular appearance on the menu, thanks to its perfect blend of ingredients, which includes a quarter pound patty made from chicken thighs ground in-house and their own shawarma seasoning blend, sandwiched between a homemade roll and topped with feta cheese, labneh sauce, pickled onions, cucumbers and cilantro.

Mini Sesame Rosewater Doughnut Their mini baked doughnuts can always be found front and center on the counter, as a wonderful reminder that every meal should end with a sweet treat. And while they come in a number of rotating seasonal flavors, the sesame rosewater is a popular flavor you can expect to see often.

They are only open twice a week. Following similar hours to Rice’s Market, the café operates Tuesdays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Keep an eye out for pop-up events hosted regularly at local spots like Manoff Market Cidery in Solebury and Free Will Brewing’s Taproom at Peddler’s Village in Lahaska. In January and February, the flea market closes, but The Speckled Egg will be open for pop-ups and mobile pickup orders.
