Here's where Augusta's newest apartments are opening, and here's how you can rent one
Affordable housing in Augusta will give a nod to local Black history when the 64-unit Lenox apartment complex is scheduled to break ground on Thursday.
The ceremony is set to begin at 11 a.m. at 1016 Laney-Walker Blvd.
The four-story, $17.5 million development takes its name from the former Lenox Theatre, just two blocks away, which was a hub of Black social activity during segregation, opening before 1920. The building on the 1100 block of Ninth Street, now James Brown Boulevard, was demolished in 1978.
Lenox tenants will be restricted to renters earning from 30% to 80% of the area's median income, or up to $54,880 for a two-person household.
Monthly rent for a typical one-bedroom apartment in Augusta averages $900, according to the online rental platform Zumper's National Rent Report.

The 25 one-bedroom units and 39 two-bedroom units include energy-efficient appliances and amenities to assist renters who have disabilities. The ground level will accommodate 4,000 square feet of commercial space.
The project's cost included $12 million in equity funding from federal and state tax credits provided through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs.
The development joins the DCA is a public-private partnership with the Augusta Housing and Community Development, the Augusta Housing Authority, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, Athens-based nonprofit Parallel Housing and property manager Woda Cooper Companies Inc. of Columbus, Ohio.
