‘He had no choice’: Gov. DeSantis drops out, endorses Trump

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Two days ahead of the New Hampshire primary, Gov. Ron DeSantis has dropped out of the Republican presidential race and endorses former president Donald Trump and it’s not coming as a surprise for some.

After nearly eight months of campaigning, DeSantis shared a more than four-minute video on social media saying he doesn’t have a clear path to victory.

“Today accordingly, I am suspending my campaign,” said the Governor. “I’m proud to have delivered 100%. I am on my promises and I will not stop now.”

DeSantis fell well short of Trump in the Iowa caucuses on Monday.

“He had no choice, he ran out of money, and he ran out of time,” Tara Newsom, a St. Pete college professor said.

Newsom said any presidential campaign has three important factors:

“Personality, policy, and the ability to have a campaign, a very well run campaign, and he zero for three,” she said.

So, what does this mean for DeSantis as he returns to Florida?

“Well, this campaign has ended the mission continues down here in Florida,” said DeSantis. “We will continue to show the country how to lead.”

Newsom said we will have to watch closely as he’s put his eyes on 2028.

“Hopefully do the work that we’re hoping that he does, rolling up his sleeves and tackling kitchen table topics like home insurance, crisis, and healthcare and education,” said Newsom.

DeSantis is now endorsing Trump, who spoke to voters at the Rochester Opera House in New Hampshire Sunday night.

“I just want to thank Ron and congratulate him on doing a very good job it’s a tough situation and a tough thing to do,” said Trump.

It’s now a matchup between Trump and Former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley. While campaigning in New Hampshire, Haley made a stop at a diner to speak with voters.

“He ran a great race,” said Haley. “He’s been a good governor, and we wish him well having said that, it’s now one fella and one lady left.”
