Funeral set for state police officer Daniel Kerstetter who was struck during traffic stop
Funeral arrangements have been made for Michigan State Police Motor Carrier Officer Daniel Kerstetter, who was injured while conducting a traffic stop Friday morning.
Michigan State Police announced Sunday that Kerstetter would be taken off life support and donate his organs in wake of the crash.
The father of three was transported during an emotional procession Monday morning with his fellow officers and family in tow from Detroit Receiving Hospital to the Chas. Verheyden Inc. funeral home in Grosse Pointe Park.
It’s there that a public visitation will take place on Thursday, from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., according to information released by the funeral home. The funeral home is located at 16300 Mack Avenue.

A funeral service is then scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church, 157 Lake Shore Road in Grosse Pointe Farms.
Motor carrier officers are armed, uniformed members of the State Police and specialize in commercial vehicle enforcement, including traffic safety, weight and size enforcement to protect the roads and hazardous material regulations, according to a release from MSP. They also conduct commercial vehicle and driver inspections.
The crash with Kerstetter is still under investigation, but police say he was in his police vehicle with his seatbelt on when he was struck by another driver and pushed into the back of the semi-truck he was behind Friday in Lincoln Park. While the semi-truck driver was not injured, Kerstetter was and the other driver died.

Kerstetter had only been with Michigan State Police since January 2023, and was formerly a well-liked equipment aid for the Detroit Red Wings.
Donations can be mailed to the Michigan State Police Fallen Trooper Memorial, with checks made out to MSTAF-FTM sent to the Michigan State Police Troopers Association at 1715 Abbey Rd., Suite B in East Lansing, 48823.
