Francine continues to weaken as it lifts north
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — 10:30 PM: Francine is now a tropical storm and continues to weaken as it lifts to the north. Heavy rain is falling across the north shore and we have a flash flood warning still for the I-12 corridor. However this rain will continue to move through and will move faster than we saw on the south shore. Either way, stay inside for the night as street flooding is ongoing across the area.
Francine’s Forecast
Francine is currently moving north at about 16 mph. The latest forecast predicts a slightly faster track than previous advisories.
Francine is forecast to make landfall along the Louisiana coast within the next few hours, likely between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., and move across southeastern Louisiana tonight.
Little change in strength is expected before landfall. Once onshore, Francine is expected to weaken rapidly.
Potential Impacts
Storm Surge Threat: There is a danger of life-threatening storm surge along the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts through tonight. A Storm Surge Warning is in effect for the area. Residents should follow instructions from local officials.
Hurricane-Force Winds: Dangerous and potentially life-threatening winds are expected in parts of southern Louisiana this evening and tonight, where a Hurricane Warning is in effect. Make sure you are in a safe place before the arrival of strong winds or potential flooding.
Flooding Risk: Heavy rainfall from Francine is expected to lead to significant flash flooding, urban flooding, and river flooding across southeastern Louisiana, Mississippi, southern Alabama, and the Florida Panhandle through Thursday night.
