Fort Davis to host movie celebration

Aug. 12—FORT DAVIS 25 years ago, the movie "Dancer, Texas Pop. 81" a film about a small mountain town in West Texas was filmed in Fort Davis and has since become a fan favorite amongst locals.

The comedy-drama film starred Breckin Meyer, Peter Facinelli, Eddie Mills and Ethan Embry and is set in the small, fictional American town of Dancer (Brewster County, Texas) where four young friends that grew up in the town together plan to leave for the big city the day after graduation. Over a week's time, their back story and present day realities collide to determine how their plans play out.

To mark the film's anniversary, the Fort Davis community will be coming together to celebrate and pay homage to the movie that showcased the town with a mural and movie celebration that will take place at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Jeff Davis county Courthouse, according to a press release from the Fort Davis Chamber of Commerce.

Main dishes will be provided by Hereford Café, Stone Village, Cueva de Leon and Mary Lou's.

The release said that attendees are encouraged to bring side dishes and desserts just like the movie's iconic potluck scene which was filmed at the same location and featuring many Fort Davis locals.

Additionally, the Fort Davis Chamber has commissioned artist Matt Tumlinson to paint a mural close to the entrance of the community, near the intersection of highways 17 and 118.

The mural and Tourist Information Board are currently being planned by the Dance, TX Chamber of Commerce subcommittee and will be paid for by a gift from Porters.
