New Florida test scores show Brevard Public Schools students slightly above state average
Results from Florida's new standardized testing system show Brevard Public Schools' student scores slightly higher than the state average, according to Florida Department of Education data.
The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking, or FAST, exams replaced the grade-level Florida Standards Assessments for the 2022-2023 school year. Tests were administered in three rounds, with the first round of testing between Aug. 15 and Sept. 30, the second between Dec. 5 and Jan. 27 and the third between May 1 and June 2.
The goal, according to the Florida Department of Education, was to collect baseline and mid-year results with the first two rounds of testing to allow teachers to “identify areas that may need additional instruction and support.” The third round of testing gave a summative score at the end of the year to measure student achievement.
Each computer-based test contained 35-40 questions covering the entire year’s lessons and included material that had not yet been covered at the time of the exam. Depending on how students answered, questions became progressively easier or harder.
A Level 3 score indicates a grade-level performance, with Level 5 being the highest score possible.
