How Florida House District 32 and 33 seats representing Brevard shaped up in Tuesday's primary
Tuesday's primary set the stage for the Nov. 5 general election for the Florida House of Representatives District 32 and District 33 seats, which represent Central and South Brevard.
Florida Sen. Debbie Mayfield beat former Congressman Dave Weldon for Florida House District 32 race. Fellow Republican Thad Altman of Indialantic, who currently holds the House District 32 seat, is term-limited out, so he ran for the District 5 seat on the Brevard County Commission.
And in the GOP primary race for the Florida House Dist. 33 Seat, Monique Miller beat out three challengers and will go on to face the Democrat primary winner, Vern Anderson, on Nov. 5.
Anderson, who beat challenger Anthony Yantz on Tuesday, hopes to break a three decade losing streak for his party, when it comes to the District 33 seat. No Democrat has held the seat since the late Harry C. Goode Jr. finished his term in 1992. Even the six-term Melbourne mayor switched to the Republican Party in 1998 before returning to city government.

The District 30, 31 and 34 races, which also represent portions of Brevard, did not have a primary because the candidates in those races are running unopposed.
Based on voter registrations, Mayfield would be the favorite to be the next District 32 representative. The district is about 47% Republican, 26% Democrat and the rest independent (no party affiliation voters or members of minor political parties), based on voter registration figures.
"I'm looking forward to serving the people of Brevard County," Mayfield said after Tuesday's win, adding that she is grateful that the voters of Brevard chose to support her and for former President Donald Trump's endorsement. Mayfield said she'd continue to promote conservative values: "The Indian River Lagoon continues to be a priority for me," she added, "and making sure Florida stays a free state …" and that "people are coming here legally."
Both Mayfield and Weldon are residents of Indialantic.
Next in the race for Florida House District 32 Seat
Mayfield faces Democrat Juan Jose Hinojosa of Rockledge on Nov. 5, who was unopposed in the primary.
Florida House District 32 includes parts of Central and South Brevard: Rockledge, Viera, Suntree, Melbourne, Indian Harbour Beach and Indialantic. The term is two years and the salary is $29,697 a year.
Mayfield defeated Weldon, who served in Congress for seven two-year terms. He first won election in 1994 as part of the "Republican Revolution." He won reelection in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006.
During his tenure in Congress, Weldon championed religious and anti-abortion causes; gun rights; and national security. He also worked to support and expand the U.S. space program. Weldon helped secure funds to construct the East Central Florida VA Clinic and to acquire land to expand the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge in Brevard County.

Mayfield: 12,960 (64.99%)
Weldon: 6,980 (35.01%)
Florida House District 33 Seat (Republicans)
Monique Miller beat out three challengers in the GOP primary race for the Florida House Dist. 33 Seat.
Miller took 7,666 votes (55.14%).
The race included four Republicans: Miller, Mike Limongello, Logan Luse and Erika Orriss.
Six candidates — the four Republicans and two Democrats — were trying for the seat, currently held by Rep. Randy Fine, R-Melbourne Beach, who cannot seek reelection to the House because of term limits. Fine is running for the Florida Senate District 19 seat.
Miller, 54, of Palm Bay, is a cybersecurity executive and a member of the Board of Directors of Moms for Liberty.
"I'm grateful that our grassroots campaign was successful," Miller said after Tuesday's win, adding that many people put in a lot of hard work to make it happen. "I'm just honored to get such a decisive victory."
She said she looked forward to working with other legislators on immigration, and reducing the cost of living for Florida families.
Miller next to face Anderson in the District 33 race
Miller now will face Vernon Mitchell Anderson Jr., who defeated Anthony Yantz in Tuesday's Democratic primary.
Florida House District 33 includes much of South Brevard: Melbourne Beach, Malabar, Palm Bay and West Melbourne.
The representative will receive a $29,697 annual salary and serve two-year terms, with a limit of four terms.

Vernon Mitchell Anderson Jr. defeated Anthony Yantz for the Florida House District 33 seat, and hopes to break that 32-year losing streak for Democrats on Nov. 5.
Anderson, 56, of West Melbourne, is a defense contractor who served 22 years in the Air Force. He also has served on the West Melbourne Planning and Zoning Board. Yantz is a 37-year-old Realtor from Palm Bay.
"It's exciting," Anderson said after Tuesday's win. "I just believe that the people of District 33 made the right choice in selecting me. We've got a long fight ahead of us, but I think we're going to prevail."
He said, if he wins in November, he'd prioritize infrastructure, the environment, "our democracy," voter's rights, a woman's right to choose, homelessness and affordable housing.

Others faced no competition
Three other House District that represent Brevard did not have primaries because they were unopposed but they will face a contest in November.

Florida House District 31: Republican Tyler Sirois (incumbent) and Democrat Joanne Terry
Florida House District 34: Republican Robert Brackett (incumbent) and Democrat Joseph Alejandro Martinez
