Fetterman trying to block $14.9 billion sale of U.S. Steel Corp, says it's wrong for workers
WASHINGTON ?Sen. John Fetterman, D-Pa., blasted the $14.9 billion sale of U.S. Steel Corp to Nippon Steel, Japan’s largest steelmaker, saying it is “wrong for workers and wrong for Pennsylvania.”
Standing on top of his Pennsylvania home, Fetterman said on X, formerly Twitter, Monday that it is “absolutely outrageous” Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel Corp sold themselves to a foreign nation.
“Steel is always about security as well, too. And I am committed to doing anything I can do from using my platform or my position in order to block this,” Fetterman said. “And I’m going to fight for the Steelworkers and their union way of life here as well, too.”
He added, “We cannot ever allow them to be screwed over or left behind.”
U.S. Steel wrote in a press release that the strategic benefits of the deal include strengthening the ability to address growing demand for high-grade steel, driving the steel industry towards decarbonization and moving forward together as the “best steelmaker with world-leading capabilities.”
The release also said U.S. Steel’s commitments with its employees, including collective bargaining agreements in place with unions, will be honored.
