FEMA warns of post-disaster scams in southern New Mexico
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – FEMA and the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security are urging residents to be aware of post-disaster scams. Ruidoso residents affected by the recent wildfires and flash flooding should be aware of con artists and criminals who are taking advantage of families.

Wildfire: FEMA warns of post-disaster scams in southern New Mexico
FEMA said criminals try to steal personal information and claim FEMA assistance for themselves. if a FEMA inspector comes to someone’s home and that person did not submit a FEMA application, their information may have been used with their knowledge. FEMA said to tell the inspector about the issue so that a request can be made to stop the application. If someone receives a letter from FEMA, call 800-621-3362.
FEMA Disaster Survivor Assitance crews, housing inspectors, and other officials carry official ID badges with photo IDs. FEMA employees will also have access to someone’s FEMA application number. FEMA and U.S. Small Business Administration representatives will not charge applicants for assistance.
Scam complaints can be filed with the New Mexico Department of Justice. Tips can be made to the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline at 866-720-5721 or emailed to [email protected].
FEMA said they do not license or certify contractors but recommend using a local contractor. FEMA has more information on contractor fraud at this link.
