What’s Driving You Crazy? – A “pause” on the traffic button for a story of music, generational family love and the magic of the internet.
LAS VEGAS ( KLAS ) – I know I’m supposed to talk about traffic.
So I hope you don’t mind if today’s story is something completely different.
It might just drive you to tears – of joy.
It’s about an unbreakable 35-year father/daughter bond.
It involves David Letterman and Mandy Patinkin. And it’s gone viral because of a tearful tiktok.
But let’s start at the beginning: an August 1989 episode of “Late Night with David Letterman.”
Mandy Patinkin was a last-minute fill-in that night.
As Patinkin talked with Letterman’s band leader Paul Schaffer, a viewer at home was holding his month-old daughter.
Back to the here and now: that tearful tiktok from the grown-up version of that baby who calls herself Millenial Maggie:
“You went out and performed what my father, chris carter, believes is the greatest performance of Somewhere Over The Rainbow that was ever done.”
Maggie’s trying to track down Patinkin to thank him, saying in her video:
“My father is in hospice care. I just wanted to say ‘Thank You’ Mr. Patinkin. Sometimes you don’t know the impact that you have on someone’s life, and I just thought it was important for you to know the impact you had on mine.”
Maggie and her Dad gave each other copies of that performance at key moments in their lives.
Her dad is gone now, but through the magic of the internet, she and Mandy Patinkin have spoken – and he’s invited her to an upcoming concert of his. She says with her dad always in her heart, he’ll be there, too.
Buckle up, drive carefully – and, please put down that phone! When you write in to join the “driving you crazy” conversation, photos and video obviously help tell your story, but not taken while you’re driving!
