Double Apple Supermarket awarded for prioritizing Black lives, public health
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A new Double Apple Supermarket on the East Side was awarded Thursday for prioritizing public health and Black lives during Black History Month.
No Menthol Buffalo presented a Certificate of Appreciation to the grocery store Thursday morning. The grocery store opened at 2565 Bailey Ave. on Tuesday and will not sell alcohol or tobacco.
Stan Martin, a spokesperson with No Menthol Buffalo, said that the tobacco industry has “appropriated Black culture.”
“The real bottom line is this, the time has come for us to save ourselves and only spend our hard-earned money with businesses that prioritize our health as much as we do,” said Martin. “This is what a responsible retailer looks like!”
No Menthol Buffalo expects that the new market’s decision will support the Black community, help people quit smoking, and prevent tobacco from getting in the hands of young people.
