Decatur installs ‘Peace Poles’ throughout city

DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The Decatur Rotary Club and Decatur Area Arts Council are advocating for peace on Earth through a series of “Peace Poles.”

12 poles have been installed throughout the city that include the words “May peace prevail on Earth.” The phrase is written in English and three other languages chosen by the organization where the pole is installed.

The poles were installed just in time for International Peace Day on Sept. 21.

“One of the cornerstones of Rotary is peace and the creation of peace, because we believe that that creating peace in our community actually has a global effect,” Decatur Art Council Executive Director Jerry Johnson said. “So, planting these poles around the city we thought would be a good way to remind people to be kind and generous to other people wherever they go.”

Two of the poles can be found in Decatur parks — one is in Scovill Garden between the zoo and the children’s museum and the other is near the main pavilion at Fairview Park.

Another pole will be installed soon in Preston Jackson Park in Downtown Decatur.

“Peace Poles” originated in Japan and started to pop up worldwide in the 80’s.
