'Customized by you': Popular bubble tea shop opens in East Peoria. Here's what to know

On June 26, Kung Fu Tea opened its first Peoria-area location in East Peoria. The next closest storefront to Peoria is located in Champaign.

The bubble tea brand, which started in Queens, New York, in 2010, has grown to include over 350 locations in the United States. The business also founded National Bubble Tea Day five years ago on April 30.

What's on the menu at Kung Fu Tea?

According to the business's website: "Each drink is customized by you! You get to pick your toppings, sugar levels, and ice levels."

Customers start by selecting a base drink. Options include milk tea, slush drinks, “punch” fruit tea, classic tea and more.

Toppings include:

  • Tapioca pearls, which have become the namesake of "bubble" or "boba" tea.

  • Red beans

  • Pudding

  • Jellies including aloe jelly, herbal jelly, caramel coffee jelly and nata jelly. Nata jelly is made with coconut and pineapple flavoring.

  • Popping bubbles, which come in fruity and coffee flavors. Unlike traditional boba, these have "a thin, gel-like skin with fresh juice inside that bursts when squeezed."

A medium milk tea with one order of bubble topping is $5.90. Most toppings are either an additional 75 or 95 cents. A milk cap on top is an additional $1.25.
