Boat stalls on ‘rough’ Lake Erie, leads to creative rescue

LORAIN, Ohio (WJW) — A stalled boat on Lake Erie was “taking on water” in 5-foot waves, when three people were rescued in rough weather two miles from shore Wednesday afternoon, thanks to quick action by Lorain firefighters.

The motor stalled on their “small aluminum” boat in “very windy” conditions, said Capt. Frank Griffith.

Wasting no time, firefighters jumped on a private boat nearby, went out in rough water, jumped onto the boat that was “stranded and in distress” then put the three adults on the boat the firefighters were using, according to officials.

Ambulances were waiting nearby, but were not needed.

“Other than being very cold and shaken up, they were OK,” Griffith told FOX 8 News.

“Our firefighters always do an excellent job. That’s what they’re here for: helping and rescuing people,” Griffith said.
