Blue Envelope Program for drivers with autism adopted in Erie County

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A new program intended to enhance interactions between police and citizens behind the wheel, specifically those with autism, is being adopted in Erie County this week.

Participants will receive blue envelopes for their important documents, such as their driver’s license and vehicle registration, as a part of the Blue Envelope Program. If pulled over, the color will alert police that the driver has autism. Deputies of the Erie County Sheriff’s Office have been made aware of the envelope’s meaning.

Police across the state are encouraged to learn about the program.

The “Handle With Care” registry was launched last month for police to be aware of and provide improved care to people with autism, Down’s Syndrome, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and substance abuse.
