1 dead from injuries sustained in Smyrna home explosion

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) — Authorities responded to a home explosion in Smyrna on Sunday afternoon, according to officials.

Smyrna officials told News 2 that a call came in around 4:30 p.m. with reports of a home explosion near St. Michael’s Lane. The explosion was contained to just one structure.

Officials added that two people were in the home when the explosion occurred, and one man sustained critical injuries. On Monday, Smyrna officials confirmed that the injured man died from his injuries.

Neighbor Patrick Gordon-Somers said that he heard the explosion and felt his own house shake. He recalled coming out of his residence and noticing a garage door in his neighbor’s driveway. Gordon-Somers added that he saw his neighbor in the doorway of the home — badly burned.

“I saw there were some flames in the house, so I ran up and I saw the guy lying on the ground,” Gordon-Somers told News 2. “I helped get him out and we helped get the dog out. Then, I ran upstairs because the wife was looking for something — I didn’t know if there was somebody else up there. She said there was nobody else, so I helped get her out of the house.”

Three Spring Hill homes damaged in destructive fire

Gordon-Somers told News 2 that about five minutes later, the whole house was engulfed in flames. Officials said that the scene is still active and that firefighters are ensuring that any gas lines connected to the home have been turned off.

An investigation into the cause of the fire will begin shortly thereafter. Officials also told News 2 that they think the blaze was started accidentally and that there is no ongoing threat to the community at this time.
