Aldi, Walmart and More are Recalling a Variety of Vegetables—Here's Why
Once again, the foodborne illness listeria is to blame for a multi-state recall on a number of vegetables and bagged salad products. What began on July 12 as a recall on just cucumbers quickly turned into a much bigger issue that affected products sold in 18 different states across the country. Products impacted by the contamination include packaged bags under the label of Wiers Farm or Freshire Farms, and bulk produce sold individually or by the pound. A full list can be found here for your convenience.
On July 22, Wiers Farm Inc. officially identified peppers, green beans, squash and other herbs along with cucumbers in association with the recall. The veggies were distributed to multiple retailers nationwide, including Walmart and Aldi. States affected by the recall include Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Listeria monocytogenes can be especially dangerous for young children and elderly people, both of which are at high risk of becoming severely sick if they contract the illness. Immunocompromised and pregnant individuals are just as susceptible to getting sick if contracted. Common symptoms include fever, muscle aches and fatigue, as well as headaches, confusion and loss of balance; and can begin anywhere within two weeks and 70 days of eating the contaminated food. More details on possible symptoms from the CDC can be found here.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported in relation to the outbreak. Those who have purchased the products in question are urged to contact Wiers Farm immediately at (419) 933-2161 or email them at [email protected].
Listeria is no joke, as we have seen its destruction on display throughout the current multi-state listeria outbreak linked to deli meat, leaving multiple people dead and others severely ill. Be safe and take care out there.
