Acting Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon announces pothole repairs, $17M repaving plan
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Acting Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon announced on Sunday the launch of the city’s $17 million road repaving plan for around 175 streets and a monthlong pothole repair effort.
The $17 million is $2.9 million more than the amount spent on potholes last year. In 2023, $11.4 million was spent.
The announcement follows years of complaints from the community regarding potholes around the city, with some causing damage to residents’ vehicles.
Scanlon said over three dozen trucks and crews will “fast-track” pothole repairs throughout the city every weekend in March. Areas with the most complaints will be given priority.
“The pothole issue is not just here in Buffalo though, it’s across Erie County. Every municipality is dealing with it. We had a very harsh winter, colder than we had in several years, but we are now going to turn a corner in how we address it,” Scanlon said. “Just last weekend we had two dozen city crews out addressing the potholes in every council district and used 40 tons of pothole patch material to address the issue.”
Department of Public Works Commissioner Nate Marton said drivers don’t have to avoid driving over freshly filled potholes since it helps to pack down the material.
The repaving plan will completely repave selected streets around the city starting in the spring and continuing through the fall.
“It’s coming out of our operating budget. It’s nothing in addition to the budget itself. We’ve gotten creative,” Scanlon said. “There’s money in there for private contractors for certain things and we’re moving some money around to make sure we can do this.”
