74-year-old pleads guilty in connection with fatal stabbing
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 74-year-old Buffalo man has pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge in connection with a fatal stabbing in 2018, the Erie County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday.
Jamal Fareed admitted to fatally stabbing 66-year-old Ray Thompson to death inside of his apartment on the 900 block of Main Street. Thompson was found deceased on Nov. 13, 2018.
Fareed has been in custody since September 2019. Criminal proceedings were postponed after it was found that he was not competent to stand trial. He remained in the custody of a mental health facility until June 2024 until the DA’s office said it received notification of his fitness to stand trial. He was found competent to do so last August after two forensic exams.
He pleaded guilty on Monday to one count of first-degree manslaughter. He had originally been charged with second-degree murder.
He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison when he is scheduled to be sentenced on April 29. He is being held without bail.
