2 Venezuelan gang members charged with Kenmore bank theft totaling over $100K
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two Venezuelan men were arrested and charged by criminal complaint with bank theft and conspiracy to commit bank theft after they allegedly carried out an ATM jackpotting scheme in October 2024 at a bank in Kenmore. the United States Attorney’s Office announced.
Officials said the two men, identified as 24-year-old David Jose Gomez-Cegarra and 19-year-old Jesus Segundo Hernandez-Gil, are members of the Tren de Aragua Gang.
It is alleged that just after 4 p.m. on Oct. 5, footage showed a vehicle, operated by Gomez-Cegarra, pulling up to the ATM at a Radius Federal Credit Union. A co-conspirator then exited the vehicle, opened the ATM using a key, appeared to install something in the ATM, pressed buttons and then closed the ATM, according to the complaint.
After the vehicle left the bank, it allegedly came back to the ATM multiple times over the next few hours and illegally withdrew money. The bank reported that $110,440 was stolen from the ATM during that time.
Gomez-Cegarra, Hernandez-Gil, and other co-conspirators are also believed to have carried out ATM jackpotting at banks in Massachusetts, Illinois, and Dryden, N.Y., totaling $187,000.
The charges of bank theft and conspiracy to commit bank theft carry a maximum penalty of ten years in prison.
