2 arrested after stolen vehicle hits police car, rolls over
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A Springville man and a 17-year-old from Buffalo were charged after a police chase involving a stolen car ended in a rollover crash, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.
A Springville woman reported her 2019 Kia Sorrento stolen from her driveway on Franklin Street around 4:20 p.m. Wednesday, officials said.
New York State Police located the vehicle traveling north on Route 219 and attempted to perform a traffic stop. The Kia instead continued into Hamburg and allegedly crashed into a police vehicle before rolling over near the intersection of Transit Road and Seneca Street.
Officials said Jay Garlock, 22, and a 17-year-old from Buffalo fled on foot following the crash.
“This criminal and reckless behavior across our region must end,” said Erie County Sheriff John Garcia in a release. “I ask our policymakers to recognize the issue of property crime that needs to be addressed.”
Garlock was arrested and charged with the following:
third-degree criminal possession of stolen property
third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
third-degree attempted grand larceny
third-degree attempted unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
reckless endangerment
He is currently being held at the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment.
The 17-year-old was arrested and charged with the following:
third-degree criminal possession of stolen property
third-degree attempted grand larceny
third-degree attempted unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
He was arraigned on the criminal possession of stolen property charge and issued an appearance ticket.
