167,000 Pounds of Frozen Chicken Recalled Due to Potential Metal Contamination

Perdue has recalled more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken because of a potential metal contamination.

On Friday, Aug. 16, Perdue Foods LLC, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), issued the voluntary recall. Affected products include:

  • Perdue chicken breast tenders with a “best if used by” date of March 23, 2025.

  • Perdue Simply Smart gluten-free breaded chicken breast nuggets with a “best if used by” date of March 23, 2025.

  • Butcher Box organic gluten-free chicken breast nuggets with a “best if used by” date of March 23, 2025.

Affected Perdue chicken products have the plant code P-33944 on the back of its packaging, per the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). These items were shipped to retail locations across the nation and sold online directly to customers.

“We determined the material to be a very thin strand of metal wire that was inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process,” Jeff Shaw, senior vice president of food safety and quality for Perdue, said in a news release. “Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to voluntarily recall all of these packages of products.”

The FSIS noted that consumers have complained about a metal wire embedded in the Perdue products. As of writing, no injuries have been reported.

Those concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider, the FSIS noted.

Additionally, the agency is "concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers," urging them to check to see if their products have been affected by the recall.
