1 man dead from early morning shooting at Hillcrest Apartments July 26: APD investigating
ASHEVILLE - Asheville Police Department detectives are investigating an early morning shooting July 26 at Hillcrest Apartments that left one man dead.
APD officers responded to a report of a gunshot wound at the Hillcrest apartment complex on Atkinson Street around 2:24 a.m. July 26, according to a news release from the department.
Officers found Denzel Mcknight, 31, suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, APD spokesperson Rick Rice confirmed. Mcknight was transported to Mission Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, the release said. Next of kin has been notified.
"Seven shell casings were located on scene and bullet damage to two apartments, in which nobody was injured," Rice told the Citizen Times. McKnight was the only victim, Rice confirmed.
Criminal Investigations Division detectives responded and are investigating the shootings, the release said. No arrests have been made in the case.
This is the 7th homicide this year in the city of Asheville.
