Tom Petty returns with Mudcrutch
Mudcrutch announced Friday that they will release a second album, 2, on May 20. The band, known as a precursor of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, also shared plans for their first-ever national tour, which will kick off in Denver on May 26 and conclude June 28 in Santa Ana, California.
Petty formed Mudcrutch in 1970 with Tom Leadon, Benmont Tench, Mike Campbell, and Randall Marsh, but the Gainesville, Florida band never released an album and separated in 1975. Tench and Campbell continued on with Petty when he formed the Heartbreakers, while Leadon backed Linda Ronstadt and Marsh became a music teacher. The ensemble reformed and released their self-titled debut in 2008.
The new album features seven Petty-penned originals, along with one composition each from Mudcrutch’s other members. While nearly two months remain until 2 hits shelves, Mudcrutch will release the first single, “Trailer,” at participating record stores as a part of Record Store Day on April 16. The limited-edition vinyl will include the Marsh-written B-side “Beautiful World.”
Petty’s most recent album with the Heartbreakers was 2014’s Hypnotic Eye.
