J.J. Abrams Refutes — and Confirms? — 'Star Wars' Rumors
The Internet has been a-flutter the past few days with leaked photos revealing apparent set pieces and creatures from Star Wars: Episode VII. Tuesday, the big news was photographic evidence that the Millennium Falcon, Han Solo’s spaceship, was being rebuilt for the production. LucasFilm had been quiet about the pics, but on Wednesday morning director J.J. Abrams broke the silence with a hand-written note posted via his company’s official Twitter account. While Abrams’s note says one thing, where he chose to photograph it says something else.
Abrams’s message reads, “I wish people would stop leaking photos from Episode VII. And making ridiculous claims that the Millennium Falcon is in the movie. JJ” But wait just a minute: The note is placed on a surface that looks exactly like the holographic chess table from the original Star Wars where R2-D2 played against Chewbacca. Which, if you’re keeping track, was located inside the Falcon.
That’s probably as much confirmation as we’re likely to get from the usually secretive Abrams, who has been a bit more transparent about filming Star Wars than for some of his previous films. He told MTV last November that he regretted trying to keep the reveal that Khan was the villain of Star Trek Into Darkness a secret. Abrams said, “I do wonder if it would have seemed a little bit less like an attempt at deception if we had just come out with it.”
Maybe with his note Abrams is testing his own Jedi mind tricks: “These aren’t the leaked photos you’re looking for.”
