Idina Menzel Responds to Campaign to Give 'Frozen's' Elsa a Girlfriend

Idina Menzel, the “Let It Go” belter and voice of Frozen’s Elsa, responded to the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend social media campaign that calls on Disney producers to give the Queen of Arendelle a same-sex relationship in the upcoming sequel.
“I think it’s great,” said the Tony Award winner to Entertainment Tonight at the Billboard Music Awards. “Disney’s just gotta contend with that. I’ll let them figure that out.”
She also added that if Disney were to give Elsa a girlfriend for Frozen 2 she would support the decision “no matter what” and that the character “changed her life.”
The campaign was first launched by Twitter user Alexis Moncada who wrote in an MTV Founders post that “the entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees. But we’ve never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.”
Although plot details surrounding the sequel have not been disclosed, Kristen Bell commented on where production is currently at in a recent Collider interview.
“They’ve just written it and they’re still doing tweaks, but I think we should be recording this month. The story is great, and they exude quality,” said Bell, who voices Princess Anna, Elsa’s sister. “What I know about that whole team is that they wouldn’t just put something out to put it out. That’s why it took them so long to even announce that we were doing a second one.”
Frozen 2 is slated for 2018.
