How 'X-Men' Forced 'The Mummy' to Change Its Plans
With the release of The Mummy trailer, we got a good glimpse of the movie’s namesake in action. Of course she isn’t the only antagonist movie-viewers have seen this year who’s adorned in ancient Egyptian-inspired costuming. X-Men: Apocalypse had Oscar Isaac’s character first start his attack on humanity from that part of the world.
As it turns out, the X-Men character, who was first teased in Days of Future Past, wound up making the people over at The Mummy go in a different direction than they had first planned.
In an interview with Cinemablend, the movie’s director, Alex Kurtzman, said, “I saw the end of Days of Future Past. And they had the character that Oscar Isaac wound up playing as a boy, and it was, I kid you not, the exact same design. And I was like, ‘Oh, man! That is not good!’ And actually it was the catalyst, it was the moment of, ‘OK, not only is this not going to be different enough, Bryan Singer just did it, I definitely don’t want to go down that road.’”
Kurtzman seems happy with having gone back to the drawing board, though. He said, “In a way it was very helpful to me, because it made me take that leap … And the minute I allowed myself to let the Mummy be Ahmanet, it just felt right. And that’s the best way for me to say it.”
