Goodbye, New York? Paul Feig Suggests New Setting For ‘Ghostbusters’ Sequel
Like the original Ghostbusters, the newly rebooted version takes place in New York City. When Yahoo Movies had the chance to sit down with director Paul Feig, we asked whether this story needs to take place in the Big Apple.
“I think if you’re starting the franchise again, yeah,” Feig said. “[New York is] such a character in the film, as much as the people and ghosts are, really, because there’s just something about New York. It’s tight confines, but also the attitudes there. It’s such a melting pot and all that. I think it really the perfect backdrop for paranormal mayhem.”
But just because Ghostbusters takes place in New York now doesn’t mean that subsequent installments of this “endless” franchise will also take place there.
“I’d love to see this situation happen in a lot of different places,” Feig said. “I think other countries would be fun. I’d love to set something in Hong Kong or somewhere in Asia because they have such a strong ghost culture there. When we were promoting the movie in Singapore, so many of the Asian reporters were showing me pictures of all of the ghosts, with the specific names of what they do, so it would be fun to bring some of those alive.”
