'American Ultra' Red-Band Trailer: Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg Spark Up Must-See Stoner Thriller (NSFW)
If Jason Bourne’s hazy memory was the result of too much weed smoking, we might end up with something like American Ultra, a new stoner thriller starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart. You can check out the exclusive, awesome-looking red-band trailer above.
Eisenberg plays Mike Howell, a dopey, shaggy-haired store clerk about to pop the question to his girlfriend, Phoebe (Stewart), when the clandestine government operation that has totally Manchurian Candidated him to be a super-soldier comes calling. The major buzzkill turns into actual kills as Mike must defend himself from enemy agents and stay sober enough to rescue Phoebe, too.
The film’s killer cast is rounded out by Topher Grace as the douchey suit ordering Mike’s termination, Connie Britton as a tough veteran agent on Mike’s side, and John Leguizamo as… we’re not exactly sure what his function is yet, besides showing off a little chest and peddling an engagement ring, but he’s owning it. Ultra marks a reunion for its two leads, who first appeared together in the great 2009 dramedy charmer Adventureland.
The August release, written by Max Landis (Chronicle) and directed by Nima Nourizadeh (Project X), packs the same type of balls-to-the-wall energy as its creators’ earlier works, while following in the steps of Pineapple Express and such Eisenberg flicks as Zombieland and 30 Minutes or Less in combining bud and bloodshed.
It’s a nice and unexpected change of pace for Stewart. The actress hasn’t cracked many smiles onscreen lately, delivering a trifecta of hard-hitting dramas in the years since wrapping up the Twilight series: the provocative Guantanamo story Camp X-Ray, the Cannes favorite Cloud of Sils Maria, and the Alzheimer’s Oscar darling Still Alice.
If anything, we can guarantee this movie will be funnier and more action-packed than the three of those combined.
American Ultra arrives to kick ass, take names, and maybe forget them on August 21. Check out the stoney posters below:
