Woodville ready to celebrate Fourth of July, village's biggest party of the year
Happy Fourth of July. I do hope you have a chance to enjoy some time with family and friends this holiday weekend, along with your favorite summertime picnic food. I’ll be hanging out with friends at Trail Marker Park, helping to throw our town’s biggest party of the year, aka the 82nd Woodville Fourth of July Celebration.
Did you know the festival is planned and organized by only nine people? Did you know that the average age of the committee members is about 60? And that those people chair or co-chair several committees each? It’s a huge undertaking, which is why the celebration committee is hoping to add to the ranks next year, both to make the work a little lighter and to perhaps add a few extra events to the lineup.
If you have any questions about the behind-the-scenes work, simply ask any committee member. We will be the ones wearing the “official” red shirts and spinning in circles this weekend. But unless it is an emergency, wait until we slow down for a minute … if we’re moving, we’re doing something to keep things running as smoothly as possible.
From the village administrative offices:
The village offices will be Thursday and Friday.
The pool is closed through Saturday. It will reopen Sunday, weather permitting.
Stevens Disposal will pick up trash Friday this week.
Mosquito spraying
The village will spray for mosquitos every Thursday evening for the rest of the summer. Spraying will begin at dusk and will take approximately 3 hours. If weather affects the schedule, or there is a significant increase in the mosquito population, spraying may also occur Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Small children as well as anyone with respiratory issues are advised to remain indoors until spraying is completed.
Swim lessons
With the Woodville Pool open and fully staffed this summer, swim lessons have been added to the schedule for July.In the Level 1 class, students will learn personal water safety and basic swimming competency. This class is scheduled for 9:30 to 11 a.m. Monday through July 11.
In the Level 2 class, which will run 9:30 to 11 a.m. July 22-26, students will learn additional water safety skills and build on their swim stroke technique.
The fee for each class for one child is $60 for village residents, $70 for township residents and $90 for anyone living outside of the 43469 ZIP code. The fee for a second child is $55, with a $5 discount for each additional child ($50 for third child, $45 for fourth child, etc.). Fees are due at registration and a parent is required to be on site for the duration of each class. To register, stop by the pool at 205 W. Erie St. or call 419-849-3031.
