Women Are Sharing Their 'Weight' On Instagram And It's Really Inspiring
When you live in a world that has historically been obsessed with one very narrow idea of what makes a woman beautiful (clue: it's related to size), it can be hard not to set high standards for yourself.
Many women have become fixated on how much they weigh, focussing on the number on the scale as some kind of confirmation of achievement; as proof they are acceptable in society.
But there's a growing movement of people eager to change the script, and that includes Jameela Jamil.
The former presenter, who's now an actress in US sitcom The Good Place, has always been vocal about body positivity, and is often the first to lambast the likes of the Kardashians when they make irresponsible decisions relating to body image. Earlier this year, in response to an Instagram account that compared the weights of the Kardashian-Jenner sisters, Jameela set up an Instagram account called 'I weigh'.
Recognising that your weight is literally just a number (and, actually, it fluctuates a lot during just one day, but you can read more about that here), Jameela wanted people to stop fixating on how much they weigh. Instead, through the 'I weigh' movement, the actress asked her followers to consider all the many other attributes we should be concentrating on; the ones that make us who we are.

And it's taking hold. Now with 100,000 followers, the 'I weigh' Instagram page asks people to share photographs of themselves annotated with descriptive words to tell the story of who they really are - what they really weigh. It's intended to make us "feel valuable and see how amazing we are, and [to] look beyond the flesh on our bones", the account's Instagram bio reads.
Here are some of the amazing women who have shared their real 'weight' via the 'I weigh' movement:

Isn't it funny how a quick reframe of self-definition can make you feel so much better than a quick hop on the scales? I know which one I'm going to do more often from now on.
