Why Tristan Thompson Is Asking for Sole Conservatorship of His Brother

Tristan Thompson has been caring for his younger brother, Amari, since their mother, Andrea Brooks, died in January 2023. But now, the NBA player is asking for sole conservatorship of his 17-year-old sibling.

In early February, Thompson filed to be the sole legal guardian and conservator of Amari, who is physically and mentally disabled and uses a wheelchair because of a form of epilepsy called Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, Entertainment Tonight reported

Thompson's court filing reveals that he has been unsuccessful in locating his father, Trevor Thompson, who has failed to pay court-ordered child support to Brooks since she took sole legal guardianship of Amari in 2014.

According to Thompson, he has been unable to locate his father, Trevor Thompson, who was ordered to pay child support when his mother assumed sole legal guardianship of Amari in July 2014.

"He has done nothing to support or raise the proposed ward since then and has relinquished all rights to have any say in the proposed ward's care," the court documents read.

"I have not had any contact with him since his separation from our late mother in 2014, and contact was minimal prior to that date," Thompson wrote of his father. "My only contact with Trevor Thompson in the past nine years was a brief interaction when he appeared at my mother's funeral. I have no knowledge of his current or recent whereabouts."

Further complicating things, Amari is a Canadian citizen who has been living with Thompson in California since the NBA player was granted temporary guardianship in September, per People. Both Thompson brothers moved in with Tristan's ex, Khloé Kardashian, after their mother died.

"If Amari is required to return to Canada there are no relatives there that have the ability or means to support Amari, and he cannot be provided the level of care and support he is receiving in the United States while in my custody," the petition explains. "[I want] to ensure that Amari continues to have a happy and fulfilling life and to provide him with the best care possible."
