Why Rihanna Skipped the 2022 Emmys Despite Savage X Fenty Having Two Nominations
New mom and billionaire entrepreneur Rihanna has two Emmy nods this year for her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty's Volume 3 runway show—and the special even won one: Outstanding Choreography for Variety or Reality Programming. But the singer chose not to fly from New York to Los Angeles for tonight's Emmy Awards show.
The reason is simple: The categories Savage X Fenty Show Volume 3 were up for were already announced at the Creative Arts Emmys on Sept. 3. Rihanna had no need to be at tonight's Primetime Emmy Awards, where the rest of the awards are announced. (Savage X Fenty Show Volume 3 was also up for Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special; the Super Bowl Halftime Show starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and 50 Cent ultimately won that award.)
This was not an individual nomination for Rihanna, either, making it less critical for her to be there to accept the award personally or attend any Emmy after-parties.
Instead, RiRi is on the opposite side of the country. Rihanna was photographed in New York City the past couple days, out with her boyfriend A$AP Rocky on Thursday, and out on her own during Sunday. The singer has primarily been focused on taking care of her baby boy, who was born in May, with Rocky.
At the beginning of August, a source told Entertainment Tonight that Rihanna fully intends to shift her focus back to her work, too. “She's one of the hardest working people out there and she can definitely have it all,” the source said, adding that she'll “be a hands-on mom and have an impressive career.”
She and Rocky have been more purposely low-key, the source added: “Privacy has become increasingly important to the couple. When it was just the two of them, they'd go out all hours of the day and night and interact with fans. Now, with the baby, they're a little more protective.”
