Why people are wearing cardigans to celebrate World Kindness Day
People all over the world are taking part part in acts of kindness in order to celebrate World Kindness Day on Wednesday. But there’s one movement on social media that’s seemingly getting the most support, and it’s people wearing cardigans in honor of the late Mr. Rogers.
It’s no coincidence that the #CardiganDay movement, which originated on social media, falls on World Kindness Day. It’s meant to encourage people to wear the signature style of children’s television star, Fred Rogers, who is known for spreading compassion.
If you've chosen to wear a cardigan today to symbolize the Mister Rogers tradition of kindness, be sure to share it, & help spread kindness today and every day! #CardiganDay pic.twitter.com/MB1PnPOajX

Today is #WorldKindnessDay. I'm sporting a cardigan in honor of Mr. Fred Rogers, who always said to look for the helpers. I’m blessed to be surrounded by the helpers I see in classrooms & in our schools everyday - adults and students. #CardiganDay #WEareLakota pic.twitter.com/c0qqFcwfhE

People have been celebrating by posting photos of themselves rocking their sweaters to Twitter and even sharing quotes attributed to Rogers ahead of the Nov. 22 release of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” a movie based off of Rogers’ friendship with a journalist. But the cardigans and kindness aren’t limited to those with their own Twitter accounts. Instead, it’s spread to newborn children and even dogs who are getting in on the celebration with some help.

Photos posted by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, in particular, have caught the attention of hundreds of people, as babies are lined up in the newborn unit wearing matching knitted sweaters, pants and Mr. Rogers inspired booties. The matching knits were made by a nurse at the Magee-Womens Hospital, Caitlin Peachin, according to a tweet. Mr. Rogers’ widow, Joanne Rogers, even showed up to take a look.

Not to be outdone, the Morris Animal Refuge in Philadelphia, Pa., posted a photo of a dog named Winslow wearing his own red sweater. The refuge encouraged followers to share photos of their pets in cardigans as well.
It's #WorldKindnessDay, so @wqed in Pittsburgh is celebrating #CardiganDay, asking people to wear a cardigan today in honor of #MisterRogers, and to symbolize his tradition of kindness. Have a photo of your pet in a cardigan? Share them here - li'l Winslow would love to see them! https://t.co/5BdK051FxN pic.twitter.com/odO3poVyQv
