Why Halle Bailey Kept Her Pregnancy a Secret Until After Her Son Was Born

Halle Bailey believes that some personal things are best kept private.
Bailey, 23, explained her decision to keep her pregnancy a secret while responding to fan questions on Snapchat earlier this week. When people asked why The Little Mermaid star kept her pregnancy under wraps, she offered a simple response.
“I think it’s really beautiful if you keep some things private and sacred,” she said in the video, a clip of which was shared on YouTube by Entertainment Tonight. The potential for negativity online also played a role in her decision, with Bailey saying she “really tried” to stay away from social media “just to keep myself sane and okay.”
“I know that there was a lot of people who would always comment and be like, ‘We know, girl, we know,’” Bailey said. “I’m like, okay, that’s great that you know [about my pregnancy]. But I’m gonna just chill. And that’s wonderful if you support me, and if not, that’s okay, too.”
Bailey introduced the new member of her family in a Jan. 6 post on Instagram. The child is Bailey’s first with her boyfriend, 26-year-old rapper DDG, also known as Darryl Dwayne Granberry, Jr.
Bailey’s Instagram photo showed the tiny hand of their son, Halo, in her own palm. In her caption for the photo, Bailey wrote, “even though we’re a few days into the new year, the greatest thing that 2023 could have done for me, was bring me my son.”
While speaking with her Snapchat followers, Bailey said she is “feeling really, really great” and is “so thankful to all of the people who have been so kind to me.”
“I’m just so happy right now,” she said.
The new mom surprised many with her Jan. 6 announcement. Though some fans had speculated about whether she might be pregnant, Bailey and DDG shrugged off the rumors last year, with The Color Purple actress continuing to attend promotional events for her projects.
When asked how she had the energy to attend the events, Bailey told her fans that she found it “helpful” to continue working during her pregnancy. Even so, she urged others who may be expecting to “listen to your body” and do what feels right.
