WeWoreWhat's Danielle Bernstein Is Releasing Her First Book — And It's Not a Fashion Story

With 2.2 million followers on Instagram, Danielle Bernstein is constantly treating the masses to a peek at her glamorous life. Ever since she first launched WeWoreWhat, her style blog, in 2010 — before the word “influencer” took its place in our everyday vocabulary — fans have followed Bernstein’s every move, virtually tagging along on her lavish international getaways and enjoying a steady stream of outfit inspo thanks to her seemingly endless designer wardrobe.

Though she’s been in the public eye for a decade now, with her latest venture, Bernstein is about to open up a whole lot more. InStyle can exclusively reveal that the 27-year-old blogger-turned-entrepreneur (who, in addition to her highly successful blog, has launched her own fashion line and recently founded Moe Assist, a project management tool for influencers) will publish her first book in May 2020: a tell-all titled This is Not a Fashion Story: Taking Chances, Breaking Rules, and Being a Boss in the Big City.

In the unfiltered retelling of her journey so far, Bernstein will get candid about everything from hitting up Long Island’s discount department stores as a style-obsessed teen to dropping out of college and, ultimately, proving to skeptics that her blog could not only be successful, but had the potential to become a career in itself. (She quickly found validation — in 2017, Bernstein was named to Forbes 30 Under 30 list at just 24 years old).

Though she undeniably has plenty to say about standing out in a sea of social-media influencers, Bernstein’s hustle wasn’t the initial inspiration for her book. It was actually sparked by a far more salacious topic: her dating life. “The idea to write a book came about four years ago, after a terrible breakup,” she tells InStyle. “I had what I like to call my 'Samantha Summer' and started writing about my experiences with men. I decided that I didn't want to release a book only about my relationships, though, and instead waited until I was ready to tell my full story.”

According to Bernstein, This is Not a Fashion Story will do just that. “I’m sharing some of the highs and lows from my life, including everything from how I lost my virginity to how I failed at starting a shoe brand.” she says. “I didn't want to leave out anything important and really tried to put it all out there. I slowly kept adding to the book over the past four years, and it was a long but therapeutic process.”

Bernstein has always dreamed big, and she’s encouraging others to do the same. “I hope readers can learn and be inspired by both my mistakes and triumphs and feel a little bit closer to me,” she says. “This book is for someone who wants to read about a young girl making it in the big city. It’s for young entrepreneurs, but it’s also for anyone who just wants an entertaining read.”

This Is Not a Fashion Story is bound to be entertaining, as anyone familiar with Bernstein’s Instagram could predict. “This is the story of my life, my loves, and finding myself,” she says. “Over two million people follow me every day and may think that they know me, but there's so much more to me than just fashion. I'm finally ready to share.”
