This ‘Westworld’ Theory About Caleb & Serac Is Blowing Our Mind
*Warning: Spoilers ahead*
Last night’s episode of Westworld set up the upcoming season three finale, and we’re starting to wonder if we missed a connection between Caleb (Aaron Paul) and Serac (Vincent Cassel). For example, is it possible that Caleb is Serac’s long-lost brother that we’ve been hearing about?
Here’s what you need to know: In season three, episode seven, titled “Passed Pawn,” Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) brings Caleb to meet Solomon (aka the A.I. device that Serac created with his brother), where he discovers his own backstory.
As it turns out, Caleb is one of the first successful subjects who underwent reconditioning therapy, which is why he’s been experiencing flashbacks that aren’t 100 percent accurate. He soon learns that he’s responsible for killing his best friend and partner-in-crime (literally), Francis (Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi).
Meanwhile, Dolores goes head-to-head with Maeve (Thandie Newton), who arrives at the facility and immediately blows off Dolores’s arm. Right when Maeve is about to end her, Dolores crawls to the EMP and presses a convenient button, which disables both hosts.
When Caleb finds the immobile hosts, a drone appears out of nowhere, claiming it has instructions for him.
So, what does it all mean? We’re not entirely sure, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Caleb is somehow related to Serac, and here’s why.
First of all, the hologram is awfully suspicious. When Dolores and Caleb arrive at the facility, they’re greeted by a hologram message of Serac that’s meant for his brother. Although Dolores brushes it off, we can’t help but wonder if it wasn’t a mistake.
Second, Caleb developed a unique bond with Solomon that Dolores wasn’t able to create. When Caleb blames the A.I. for making him kill Francis, Solomon reminds him to stick to the plan or else he “will not achieve the desired outcome.” So, why is Solomon helping Caleb? It’s possible that Solomon knows Caleb underwent reconditioning therapy and is trying to trigger memories that Serac has suppressed.
And third, there has to be some significance to Dolores repeatedly referring to Solomon as “trapped.” It’s no secret that she doesn’t support this notion, which is why she escaped Westworld. However, if there was some sort of disagreement between Serac and his brother about whether to confine the A.I., it would explain why he erased Caleb’s memories in the first place.
Perhaps Serac’s master plan involved Dolores befriending Caleb (aka his brother) and leading him back to Solomon, but Dolores is too focused on her own mission to realize that she’s being set up.
We’re on to you, Caleb. The season three finale of Westworld airs on Sunday, May 3, at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on HBO.
