Westchester's Taco Project wins Jeanne Muchnick's heart for 'Best Thing I Ate' this week

Kudos to whoever said tacos are life. They're quick, tasty and filling. It's why the classic fish tacos — I had them battered though you can also get them sautéed — at The Taco Project in Pleasantville are the best thing I ate this week. I also liked the steak.

The fast casual eatery, which has locations in Tarrytown, Bronxville and Yonkers, serves up lots of choices, making this a crowd-pleaser of a place. Tacos, which come two to an order, are available in either hard shell or in yellow corn tortillas. Adding guac is — at least for me — always a fab option.

Going for more carbs, I went for the sidewinder fries with a craft beer batter and tasty sauces like chipotle aioli, jalape?o ketchup and Mexican blue cheese. For the sake of research (LOL!), I tried the Mexican corn and the "Green Amigo" margarita made with a housemade green juice. It has quickly become my new favorite (and a perfect drink for spring). With its nutrient-rich antioxidants — the green juice is made with spinach, cucumber, green apple and pineapple — it's the perfect balance of sweet, slightly herby, and tart. Plus, you've gotta love the splash of Casa Amigos Blanco tequila.

I also sampled a mushroom quesadilla which had a nice cheese to mushroom ratio.

Nick Mesce and his partners Carmelo Milio and Sebastian Aliberti have built a solid business on fast casual amidst a playful, colorful décor. Their first spot opened in Tarrytown in October 2014 followed by Yonkers in August 2017; Bronxville in March 2019; and Pleasantville in February 2021.

Plus, a new food truck will be rolling out soon for private parties and events. Check their social medai for details but plan on an end of spring/early summer reveal featuring many of the restaurant's favorites.
