WATCH: The Weird Way Queen Elizabeth's First Pregnancy Was Announced

With the internet abuzz with the news of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry expecting their first child, it got our wheels turning about one of our favorite royals: How did Queen Elizabeth II break the news of her first pregnancy?

Of course, when Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) was pregnant with Charles in the 1940s there were no official royal Twitter or Facebook pages — let alone internet. So did she hire a British monarch stork to sweep through the Garden at Buckingham Palace? Did an official press representative hold a conference to break the news? Was there a school holiday to celebrate the incoming royal addition? Not quite.

As it turns out, there was a very hazy announcement with hardly any specifics regarding the happy circumstance. "...in 1948, before Princess Elizabeth gave birth to Prince Charles, the palace announced her pregnancy this way: 'Her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth will undertake no public engagements after the end of June,'" according to the New York Times. And that was that.

Certainly, times have changed since. These days, pregnancy announcements from the royal family press team are the norm. We're wishing Meghan a happy and healthy pregnancy, even if she didn't get to mark the occasion with one of these Southerner-worthy pregnancy announcements.
