Below Deck meets Titanic meets The White Lotus…that’s Triangle of Sadness. The satirical black comedy premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d’Or and earned an 8-minute standing ovation—the leading currency of film festivals. To put that in context, Elvis received a 12-minute standing ovation at Cannes, Colin Farrell’s The Banshees of Inisherin received a 13-minute ovation, and Don’t Worry Darling clocked in at a 4-minute ovation.
Triangle of Sadness stars Woody Harrelson, Harris Dickinson, and Charlbi Dean in her final film role. The film’s writer and director, Ruben ?stlund, is a Swedish filmmaker who has received critical acclaim (and awards to match) for practically every film he’s ever made. And even before ever picking up a camera, he'd worked at various ski resorts in the Swiss Alps, so something tells us he’s well versed in the neuroses of the ultra rich.
What Is Triangle of Sadness About?
The French title for this film, Sans Filtre, translates to “without filter,” so that might shed *some* light on what’s going on here. Yaya (Dean) and Carl (Dickinson), a celebrity model couple, are invited to board a luxury cruise for the ultra rich alongside a Russian oligarch, an arms dealer, and other Bezosian characters. Just as the richest among us are settling into their massive super-yacht, unwinding in the Grecian sun, and summoning the staff every three seconds, a storm rolls in, raining on the parades of the 1 percent…and from there chaos descends.
The film is a satire on wealth, class, and privilege. As for the title, the triangle in question is actually a reference to the plastic surgery term used to describe the wrinkle that forms between the brows (often remedied with a poke or two of Botox). The entire film, from beginning to end, is an evisceration of classism and “appearance as capital.”
Following the success of The White Lotus, both critical and in the zeitgeist, it’s clear that audiences are hungry for more, looking not just to “eat the rich” but to completely devour them.
Yes, It *Did* Win Tons of Awards, TYVM
Including the top prize of Best European Film at last year's year’s 35th annual European Film Awards. ?stlund, for his part, secured the Best Screenplay and Best Director honors, which he dedicated to costar Charlbi after her unfortunate sudden death just months after the film premiered in Cannes in May 2022. Additionally, actor Zlatko Buri?, who plays a Russian fertilizer magnate in the film, beat out fellow contenders Paul Mescal and Eden Dambrin for Best Actor.
