Watch Kai Lenny Score Gigantic Teahupo'o and Surf Hidden Gem
Kai Lenny's a busy guy.
He races between Hawaiian Islands, helps his community, saves puppies, chases huge waves around the world, and even has twin girls.
So it's not surprising that he hopped a last-minute flight to Tahiti this summer, arrived three hours before sunrise, and spent 18 hours there. A little crazy, maybe. But his motivation was clear:
"I knew that I just wanted to ride the best, biggest barrel I could."
Red Bull Surfing captioned the clip above:
"@kai_lenny pulls tow partner @lucaschumbo into a bomb at Teahupo’o in the #LifeOfKaiSeason Finale. Watch the full episode now on Red Bull TV. Link’s in the bio."
The post above shows a clip from the latest Life of Kai, which documents Lenny's first time towing in at the legendary Tahitian big wave break.
The session was his first with Chumbo since they charged Nazaré together a year ago.
The edit shows some epic POV and a helluva lotta giant barrels. Lenny is charging, but so are other big wave surfers like Nathan and Ivan Florence, Koa Rothman, Matahi Drollet, and Raimana Van Bastolear, aka the Godfather of Teahupo'o.
At the top of the episode, Lenny says:
"Teahupo'o is so different from any other wave because it's not measured in height, probably more in increments of fear," he says.
He continued:
"It allows you to be in the widest, biggest, cathedral of a barrel you'll ever be in. That wave is one of the deadliest waves on planet Earth because it's six feet deep."
After Lenny tows into huge, perfect Teahupo'o barrels, Raimana swoops him off to a secret spot and barreling rights.
Looking back on it, Lenny says:
"It was a dream come true."
