Mindy Kaling Battles a Male-Dominated Writers’ Room in New ‘Late Night’ Trailer
It’s here. The brand-new trailer for Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson’s comedy Late Night, that is.
The film, which was a Sundance festival favorite this year, is directed by Nisha Ganatra (Transparent) and tells the story of a legendary TV host, Katherine Newberry (Thompson) whose show is on the verge of cancellation. In an attempt to save it, she embarks on a game-changing transformation with the help of a new diversity hire.
Enter Molly Patel (Kaling) to the now-washed-up show’s (male-dominated) writers’ room, and hilarity ensues. As Molly pushes to introduce new bits and comedy, she encounters some pushback—but builds new relationships (both romantic and platonic) along the way.
The Ocean’s 8 actress revealed that she pulled inspiration from her own life for the film. Don’t forget, she was the only female writer on The Office back in the day. And of course, not only does she star, but Kaling also penned the script.
The star-studded cast also includes John Lithgow (The Crown), Hugh Dancy (The Path), Reid Scott (Veep), Paul Walter Hauser (I, Tonya), Denis O’Hare (Dallas Buyers Club), John Early (Search Party), Max Casella (Jackie), Megalyn Echikunwoke (Night School), Amy Ryan (The Office) and Ike Barinholtz (The Mindy Project).
So yeah, our expectations are high to say the least. Check out the full-length trailer above and see for yourself.
Late Night hits theaters on June 7, 2019.
