There Was a Vietnamese Woman Wearing Jack's Necklace on ‘This Is Us’ & I Totally Missed It
*Warning: Spoilers ahead*
Right when I was starting to feel clued in to what’s happening on This Is Us, the writers dropped a subtle hint that has me majorly confused.
Season three, episode four of This Is Us, titled “Vietnam,” focused on Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) past. Sure, my attention was initially drawn toward the newest Pearson, Nick (Michael Angarano), but upon closer inspection, I couldn’t help but notice that a Vietnamese woman was wearing Jack’s famous necklace. (You know, the one Kevin lost in season two.)
The scene takes place in a small fishing village and features Jack talking to another soldier. When a little boy runs up to him and shows him the fish he caught, his mother (aka the mystery woman) intervenes, demanding he leave them alone. If you blinked, you may have missed the very obvious necklace dangling from her neck.
Although I don’t know how Jack obtains the necklace, my best guess is that he develops a relationship with the woman, which is why it means so much to him. There are two ways this could play out, in my opinion.
Since Nick dies in Vietnam, the woman could get caught in the crossfire. Whether there’s an attack on the village or some other disaster, taking the necklace off her dead body seems like a total Jack move.
Second, there may be more than meets the eye. For example, Nick has been in Chu Lai for years, so there’s a chance he fathered a child (the young boy?) during that time.
Whether she’s Nick’s baby mama or a random chick, I’m just hoping that it doesn’t take the writers three seasons to fill us in.
This Is Us airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC.
