VIDEO: Watch the 'Worst' SUP Surfing Wipeout from the 2024 Backdoor Shootout
It's been a winter of wipeouts at Pipeline.
It started with Brazil's Joao Chianca in early December when a Backdoor wipeout sent him to the hospital. After that, Pipeline hospitalized Tahiti's Eimeo Czermak and took out the North Shore's Koa Rothman.
Just days ago Maui big wave surfer Kai Lenny took the first wipeout of Da Hui Backdoor Shootout during his SUP heat on Thursday, cracking his helmet like an egg and getting hospitalized with a concussion. And now, another one below.
In its caption for the video above, Off Da Lip described the wipeout:
"The Stand Up Paddle Heats of the Backdoor Shootout saw some amazing surfing, and all the contestants were charging.
"On one of the bigger waves of the morning, Eddie Garcia went for it but got hung up in the lip. In a split second he was forced to jump off his board from the top of the wave.
"Ideally you would want to land feet first and pencil dive through the bottom. However Eddie was put in a very awkward position where he tried to jump forward and ended up going head first for the bottom of the wave.
"After coming up, he was taken in by the jetski and was able to walk up the beach on his own. Always a good sign. We hope Eddie is okay and the wipeout was one that looked like it could've been worse than it was."

One viewer witnessed it live and commented:
"I watched this live and shook my head thinking the man just received a miracle. Considering Kai’s didn’t look half as bad yet he blew his helmet apart. My Hawaiian brothers are just straight-up fearless."
