A Video Shows Harry Styles Trying to Signal That His Grammys Stage Was Broken
Harry Styles performed "As It Was" at the Grammys on Sunday, and while he definitely did an amazing job per usual, some fans felt the performance was slightly off. And there's a reason! Turns out the revolving stage Harry and his dancers had used for rehearsals broke literally on the night of the show, and started turning the wrong direction.
"What you don't know is that the moment the curtain opened, and it was time to perform, our turntable started spinning in reverse," performer Brandon Mathis explained on Monday. "Backward. Freaking all of us out on live television, and there was nothing we could do to stop it. So after a week of rehearsing this piece perfectly going this way, the moment it's time to perform it starts going this way. And in real-time, we had to troubleshoot and try to do a complete piece in reverse."
Entertainment Tonight reports that another one of Harry's backup performer, Dexter, explained on a since-removed TikTok that "Harry did his best to be able to walk and reverse everything while he was singing and reverse his entire duet... Unfortunately, news outlets didn't know what was happening, so they called it lethargic or boring or whatever, but it really was that we're just trying to fucking stay standing."
At one point Harry was even seen subtly signaling that the stage was turning in the wrong direction:
Given all this info, Harry and his dancers deserve a lot of credit for getting the performance done pretty flawlessly! Watch it below:
