VIDEO: Runaway Jetski Rides Wave at Mavericks, Terrorizes Lineup
In the early to mid 2000s, a rap music revolution went down in Northern California.
Rhyme slingers from the Bay Area sparked a movement, a genre, a way of life – all of it was dubbed “hyphy.” It included rappers Too $hort, Mistah F.A.B., Mac Dre, and more; it involved slang, dance moves, loads of ecstasy pills (or “thizz”), and perhaps the most recognizable aspect of hyphy, besides the music, ghost riding the whip.
Well, apropos to the hip hop movement of yesteryear, a jetski at the California’s premier big-wave surf spot, Mavericks, went for a ghost ride on December 28th.
Footage from the incident shows a jetski pilot in the channel at Mavericks, amongst many other jetskis – either safety crews, or tow-in crews, or both.
Then, this particular jetski driver loses control. It’s unclear exactly what happens, but somehow, the jetski ends up unmanned, throttle engaged, and careening towards the lineup at Mavs.
Next, it catches a wave. Probably a 12-to15-footer.
After easily making the drop with all that gas-powered speed, the jetski bottom turns towards the wave face, and kicks out into the channel.
High fives all around. Nice one.
From there, other jetskis in the water scatter to get out of the way. Somehow, once back in the channel, the ghost jetski is neutralized. The throttle no longer jerked. Lucky, because if that thing were to keep going, it could’ve done some serious damage.
By the looks of it, nobody was injured. No collisions, nothin'.
Stay tuned for more from this potentially historic, somewhat chaotic, destructive, terrifying exciting run of swells slamming Hawaii and California.
